Honestly, yes, it's kind of lame to see some of the names. There's some I see where I'm just like "erm, yeah, right, that's dumb."
On the other hand, I've seen some that are memorable, instead of more of the same old fantasy fare rehashed.
Eh. I have 12 serious character names. And Disco Infiltration (someone beat me to Disco Infiltrator waah). So I can't really object without being a hypocrite.

Names don't really bother me much. I'm sure EVERYONE has come across names that have bothered them on some way (not offensively).
IMO, names that sound like they came out of Lord of The Rings or some other fairly tale make me feel like I am playing with D&D nerds. But what can you do? Just go with it.
Also, novelty/funny names are the best. If your name puts a smile on peoples face, IT IS the best kind of name hands down.

I can't believe this hasn't made it in yet, but my all time favorite guild name 'Alesia is using Penetrating[Blow]'.
And I'm guilty of having an all caps name, but I thought a fire ele named H A D O K E N was just too good to pass up.

Being from England, you probably aren't aware that Sofa King is a chain of sports bars, furniture stores, a racing league, and a line of clothing.
Its really pushing it to ban it as appropriate when Sofa King commercials can be aired on the television and radio.

If I'm creating a character to gather a bit of faction from, say, RA, I'll create my characters with stupid names.
The Bath Tub was my monk, I think.
Mending Wammoh was my Corrupt Enchantment Necro.
Squish This was whatever I felt like reincarnating it into.
Better that than some prettified name no one can remember, eh?

Lol, having lived in Europe for 6 years, I wouldn't say that simply because something is on television or on the radio should qualify it as being appropriate. Even some of the things that are shown on prime time US television to me aren't appropriate.
Maybe the name was banned because it is a trademark?

It depends... Sometimes a novelty name makes me laugh...
I dunno. If they're creative and clever then they're excused but... What kind of parent names their kid Il Spawn Of Fire Il, even in a world of fantasy? (The GW world ain't THAT crazy...)

It's a matter of opinion. My son's name is derived from the first Biblical murderer, which is pretty close to "Spawn of Whatever" if you put it in context. I'm not religious, though, so it means F-all to me.
I have a Dervish named "I Ride A Pale Cow". The day I made the character my Fiance made one as well and named it "A Pale Cow".
Whatever makes you giggle is all good by me. The most memorable name I've come across in game (and by far my favorite to date) was Captain Gigglepants. Whoever they are, they've got the right idea!

Coming from an ex-diablo 2 player, i can honestly tell you it does not affect me at all. I do think they're really stupid, but they don't make me think twice about them when i see them in-game.

it's not that they can't spell (or at least for most of them) but they are choosing to use the internet chatting lingo. i can't remember what it's called and i don't feel like looking it up right now lol. stuff like "teh" "ur" "puhleez" "bai" "boi" etc., etc.
the only names that irk me in the slightest are all the ones that are like, "mr. derv" "dervy derv" "derv dude"
OR!!
MY MOST FAVORITE OF ALL..............all the assassins out there with the word "assassin" misspelled in their name but not on purpose which prompted me to create one of my favorite toons......Misspelled Assassin. i orginally created her for fun and storage, but she has become one of my favorite characters. lol
but seriously folks......"retarded woodchuck" ftw! XD

First off, roll a 1d20 to save against.... Then roll initiative...
Here we go with the steriotyping. I'v met bigger dorks/nerds/geeks at video gaming conventions than I'v ever known at PnP D&D conventions.
Most of the time PnP (pen and paper) gamers have good jobs, are highly intelligent and are quite mature, opposed to the video gamers who have no maturity what so ever, or hardly ever shows it, Can barely spell their own names and hardly even have the money to keep up with the newest games.
PS: Do not confuse Tabletop RPer's with Larpers (live action role players). two very different things.
And yes I am a gamer through and through, I play Video games, Tabletop games, Dungeons and Dragons, warhammer 40k and battletech included, Card games like magic and yugioh and legend of the five rings, Dice games. I am also a Practiced Dungeon master/Game master and a veteran player. And I used to judge magic the gathering tournaments at a gamestore and gaming conventions.
Aside from larpers, video gamers are the biggest nerds I have ever seen. But just because you are into a certain hobby does not mean you fall into the steriotype. I know people in popular bands and movie stars who play dnd, vampire, yugioh and even odder games.
On Topic, I don't mind most names. I myself am guilty of taking Dragonlance names, such as Riverwind my ranger, Rhys Mason my monk and Raistlindantilus, my necro.
Nanoo Nanoo, I'm outi.

The "Internet chatting lingo" you speak of is called, with various spellings and use of numbers instead of letters, "leetspeak" ("Elite Speak") by its users - but which is, in reality, known as "Idiot Speak".
